How to "Engage" a Room Full of Students Who Have No Interest in What You're Teaching Them

If you’re a teacher, you’ve probably been in a lot of rooms in which nobody cares what you have to say. And if you haven’t yet, you will. It comes with the territory.

But there are some techniques you can use to get students’ attention without having to resort to gimmicky “engagement” tricks where you feel like you have to put on a performance or construct an elaborate gamification system to get anything accomplished.

It’s actually quite easy.

Last Thursday, I posted a chapter of a study guide I wrote for a course, and I annotated it so teachers (or parents) can see what my thought process was in creating the material to maximize student interest, comprehension, and interaction. In this episode, I do the same thing for a live lecture.

As I walk you through a short portion of this talk to about 130 students, I pause and explain why I’m doing what I’m doing. I wrote the other day that there are too many posts here on Substack explaining WHAT to do and not enough showing HOW to do it. So, here you go!

You can watch the rest of this lecture here if you are interested.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions about applying these ideas in your own classes. Thanks for watching!
