Here I discuss five key words that you MUST employ with your students in ALL of their studies, not just in English class, to improve their reading comprehension.
I also demonstrate how to use them in two completely different situations: with a fiction text for first graders, and with a non-fiction text for college students. These comprehension techniques are applicable to any text and for any age level.
While some folks are just coming around to recognizing these terms in their “science of learning” and “science of reading” methods, they have been around for over 40 years and have been valid strategies based on how the brain works. So, this isn’t some new fad; it’s truly the best way to improve comprehension through metacognition.
And these terms don’t just work for reading—they apply to listening too! So, if you are giving a lecture, students can go through these steps and maintain understanding and strengthen memory.
