This clip is from my course “How to Build Moral Maturity through Sports and Stories” on my English CHAMPION teaching site.
This module occurs about one-third of the way through the course, so I present a quick summary of where our study began, the key ideas and texts we’ve covered so far, the main goals we are trying to achieve in the course, and where we are headed next.
Reviewing what was just covered and reiterating broader contexts is extremely helpful for students, and I do it often through the course of this study.
After spending several modules discussing the hero’s journey, tragic heroes, and Plato’s philosophy of excellence, we are now transitioning to individual character studies. I like using literary archetypes as the framework for helping students understand moral values and giving them models to follow—in sports, in literature, and in their real lives. The first archetype we tackle is the Warrior.
