I became a teacher to help all children—but especially boys—develop a love for learning, and a love for books, the way I did. My journey to becoming a lifelong reader—even one with a PhD in literature!—started very young, mostly inspired by my parents and many trips to libraries. And I’m frustrated at the many stories I hear of boys no longer reading and student literacy rates overall continuing to decline.
We parents and teachers need to do a better job of finding materials our kids will like, that they will want to read about. I offer what worked for me here.
