“The Turkey” is not one of Flannery O’Connor’s most famous short stories, but it packs a lot of meaning in just a few pages.
In this story of a boy out playing in the woods, he undergoes several levels of self-analysis, pondering deep questions about morality. When things don’t go as planned, he must make a choice what kind of life he’s going to choose to live.
This is part of my course at English CHAMPION, The Short Stories of Flannery O’Connor. It’s great for teenagers, and in addition to my lectures, it offers links to every story and discussion/writing prompts for students. Challenge your students with one of America’s greatest authors—join today!
