Colleges: you don't have a retention problem; you have a recruiting problem

This episode is based on an article I read recently about “retention marketing”—a series of techniques used by universities to keep students enrolled.

However, these schools are not understanding the psyche of today’s students and don’t realize that most of these ideas are not new. They have already been in place for most of the 17 years I have been a college professor. Yet, students continue to drop out at high rates.

These schools are simply recruiting and allowing into their schools the wrong students. It’s as simple as that. So, how do you get the right students?

I offer ten pieces of advice after my critique of the article that are cheap to employ. Universities need to stop looking for band-aids and start focusing on long-term solutions. The ideas I discuss here can help.
